I have been using the Manuka Doctor Apirefine Flawless Primer nearly every day for the last month or so as a primer before my makeup or on its own. To say the least, it has really changed how my skincare affects my makeup application for the good!
Manuka Doctor is a leading company in New Zealand and the U.K. for advanced skincare using the combination of Manuka Doctor’s Patented Purified Bee Venom (PBVTM) and Certified UMF 18+ Manuka Honey with key ingredient Seboclear™. The primer in question is said to instantly even out complexions and reduce and minimise the appearance of redness, pores, fine lines and wrinkles.
My skin is typically normal with the occasional sensitivity to some ingredients. I am occasionally prone to breakouts, a bit of red skin around my cheek areas and do not have any wrinkles (apart from a few crinkles, from smiling, under my eyes.) As you should when using any products with bee venom, I did a test patch which showed no adverse reaction from my skin to the primer which meant I was clear to use it.
Personally I did not see much colour correction from the primer as my skin tone is a bit darker than the primer colour. However I did notice miniscule reduction to the redness on areas where I had a few pimples. The texture of the primer feels nice and silky on my skin and I feel like it has improved the smoothness of my skin on my face in general. I would credit this to the P-Refinyl in the primer which controls the production of sebum and oil to create a smooth and matte finish. Using this primer definitely created an amazing base before applying my finds toon and other makeup. One thing I do have to point out is that for me personally it didn’t help in the slightest to keep my makeup in place all day, unless I used my Australis Original Primer on top of it. If I wasn’t intending on wearing any makeup though, it left my skin feeling good throughout the day as my pores where able to breathe. Talking about my pores I would have to say that they definitely aren’t looking as big as they used to but they are still there of course.
As for whether I would buy this again or recommend it to you my readers, well I want you to keep reading below on my thoughts on Bee venom extraction. The primer itself is wonderful and I will keep using it until I run out, but I encourage you to reads my writings below before you make your own decision!
You can buy the Manuka Doctor ApiRefine Flawless – Advanced Skincare Primer for $37.95 (30ml) at Life Pharmacies and selected Unichem’s in New Zealand.
To address any concerns to whether this product is cruelty-free.
Any products that use bee venom aren’t cruelty free depending on your opinion of the extraction of the bee venom. As you can see in the video below from the Manuka Doctor Website, the bees are electrocuted in small doses to make them angry enough to try to sting the plate. This causes them to release their venom without killing the bee so they are able to “fly away.”
I personally am not against the use of honey in beauty products as a lot of the time there is not harm coming to the bees to extract the honey from the hives. However when it comes to the extraction of the bee venom I really don’t know what to think. Although the bees “fly away” after releasing some of their venom, being electrocuted for it isn’t something I liked seeing happen in the video. This means that I wont be buying any products containing bee venom in the future.
So why did I write this review if I don’t believe the product is cruelty-free? To answer the question simply I like the product, but I wanted to let you all make your own informed decision on whether or not you choose to use products with bee venom.
