Some days it can be hard to remember who you are and the things that you love because the world wants to make you one of many, rather than letting you be the only you. As someone who is very visual I like to write lists and stick them to my pin board. Having something you can look at everyday can give you confidence that you are being the best version of you that you could possibly be. So today I wanted to share with you 10 of the things that I love that make me the person I am.
Watching the sky
Cloud watching when I was younger is what started me off with my love of watching the sky. No matter how long you look at it the sky will always change, and you will never see the same sky twice. This is one of the awe filling things that encourages me a lot and is a constant reminder of my faith and who I am as a person. I live for that moment between the sun setting and the stars coming out in all their brilliance. I could make a whole book filled with pictures that I have taken of the sky.
Singing is one of my biggest passions. Ever since I was a young girl I have been surrounded by music, thanks to my music loving parents, and have been singing since I can remember. One of my favourite parts of singing is harmonising as I love to listen to layered music. My favourite genres of music are Jazz, Christian Rock and R&B. My favourite singers are Nat King Cole, Adele, Ed Sheeran and Kari Jobe. This also leads into my love for singing with other people and singing in choirs. In primary school in Christchurch I sung in the Lion’s Christchurch Schools Music Festival and was also a part of the Special choir. At my last two churches I sung in the worship band and developed my passion for singing which has led to me going to study a Bachelor of music this year in Hamilton.
Reading and Writing
Pre-NCEA years at high school you were guaranteed to find me with me nose stuck in a book. My favourite series of all time has to be the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling and if you haven’t read them
we can’t be friends you should go to a library or bookstore and get Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone now! Since doing NCEA, starting uni and working full-time I have progressed more towards writing things for others to read. The main way I do this is through this blog, The Spanish Bluebell, as well as my own personal journal writing.
When I walk into a neutral palette room the creative side of my brain just shuts down. That’s because I react more to brighter colour. Quite simply they excite me more and make life more beautiful to me. I love to wear bright coloured clothing, or if I am wearing more neutral colours I wear brightly coloured accessories
It’s no surprise that flowers are something that I love, They are all so brightly coloured and make the world beautiful (which are two things I love) and brighten up anyone’s day. I think the amount of photos I have taken of flowers almost rival the makeup selfies on my phone and instagram! One of my favourite things to do as a child was going out and picking flowers with my grandma in her garden. Then I would make these little floral arrangements to take home and put in a vase in my room. I love all flowers but especially Bluebells and Hydrangea. Bluebells, obviously, as I have named my blog The Spanish Bluebell after the Spanish bluebell flower. I also love the variety of colours you get of Hydrangea and that one bush can have multiple colours.
The colour Blue
Looking in my wardrobe and at all my stationary the main colour you will see is blue. I think one of the many reasons I love the colour blue is because of the sky and the sea. There are so many different shades of blue in the sky and sea and they are always changing. Normally blue is associated with being unhappy, but for me it is my happy colour and the one I feel most comfortable and beautiful wearing.
You can probably guess from my numerous posts on the blog and on my Instagram that I love my makeup. When I move up to Hamilton my makeup collection was the one thing I would not have taken out of my bags when they were overweight. Makeup application is one of my favourite creative outlets and the most convenient to practise everyday.I love experimenting with different colours and makeup looks. I love teaching others how to apply their makeup as well as doing makeup makeovers for friends and family for special occasions and just plain old fun.
Painting and photography
I’ve always loved to paint and do arts & crafts. I mainly love to paint flowers and landscapes which also translates into my photography. Photography was something that I started to take an interest in 2010 while I was in Year 10 at high school. Although I never did photography at school or had a camera that took decent photos until 2014, I would go out and take photos whenever I was allowed. As you can tell by my Instagram I still love taking photos whether they are of my life, others lives, or just photos of things that catch my eye. This passion of photography has really helped and contributed to my blog too!
I remember when we adopted our first family dog, a stray, while we were living in Spain. He was a brown Cocker Spaniel called Jock. Our family pets at the moment are Bonnie (English Cocker Spaniel) and Luna, my (lunatic) black cat, who we bought at a school fair. Apart from those two my favourite animals would have to be sea turtles. When I was younger I always dreamed of being a Vetanarian or a Marine Biologist. One of my favourite books when I was younger was called “Girl Overboard” about a girl studying Marine Biology and working with dolphins and sea turtles.
I was raised watching Disney movies and would watch Pinocchio over and over and over and over again on the plane trips from Spain to New Zealand and back. It drove my Mum barmy! Now that I’m an adult (or something) I haven’t “grown out of” watching Disney movies and I still love watching them as much as I did when I was a child. No shame here! I love both the old and new Disney movies, but my favourites are the classic animated movies, over the real life Disney movies.
Now that I have shared 10 of my favourite things with you, why don’t you share some of your favourite things with me? I’d love to hear what you love and what brings you joy!
